BAHRAIN — There was a surprise delivery on board the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69).

A sailor assigned to a squadron in Carrier Airwing Three aboard the Ike gave birth while the ship was in the Arabian Gulf.

Cmdr. Bill Urban, spokesman for U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, says the sailor complained of abdominal pain and was recently admitted to the ship’s medical department.

The sailor then birthed a healthy, seven pound baby girl.

Both mom and baby are healthy and doing well.

The sailor and her baby were taken to Bahrain via helicopter to a shore-based hospital for follow-up care.

Cmdr. Urban says the sailor did not report being pregnant and her chain of command was unaware of the pregnancy. Officials believe the baby was likely full term.

The Eisenhower deployed at the end of May.
