LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – Dozens of students at W-H Knuckles Elementary returned to class on Monday weeks after Hurricane Matthew but not to their old classroom.
“For our school its mostly the water that’s seeped in and we were concerned about the presence of mold and any contaminants,” said W-H Knuckles Principal Eric Sanders.
The first grade wing is still shut down while crews clean up the damage.
A similar problem can be found at Rosenwald Elementary, where some classrooms are still closed.
“We moved those kids out and teachers before they came in today and we’re doing some cleaning then we will go back and retest air quality for that classroom again,” mentioned Robeson County Superintendent Thomas Lowry.
Superintendent Thomas Lowry tells News 13 a licensed hygienist from Raleigh tested the air quality in schools across the county.
The superintendent described the results as “fine”.
We asked for specific results for each school and the name of the hygienist Monday afternoon, but have not heard anything back.
Lowry says the schools goal is to get students back to normal as quickly as possible, but they want to keep kids safe.
