Sumter man charged after 1-year-old suffers severe burns

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged a man after a child suffered severe burns.

26-year-old Kevon Hayward, of Sumter, was arrested on Tuesday. A press release says Hayward is charged with unlawful neglect of a child after a 1-year-old male suffered third degree burns to his back and legs while in Hayward’s custody on April 23.

The release also says the child’s mother left the child in Hayward’s custody while at work. Hayward reportedly told the mother the child had burned himself on a space heater while Hayward was playing video games.

The child was sent to the Augusta Burn Center for treatment. No information on the child’s condition has been released.

Hayward remains in jail.
