SUMTER, SC (WBTW) – Sumter investigators seized about $180,000 worth of marijuana after getting a tip that a large amount of the drug was being brought to a specific location in the county.
Deputy Ken Bell with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office says officials acting on the tip seized 63 pounds of marijuana and eventually arrested three family members.
Deputy Bell says three people drove to the state of Washington and brought the marijuana back with them in a car. When investigators showed up at the suspects’ home, they searched a car registered to one of the suspects and found the drugs inside two duffel bags and two suitcases.
Robert W. Hendrix, 59, and Marianne Hendrix, 61, of Dalzell were both charged with trafficking marijuana, 10 pounds or more but less than 100 pounds. Later, 30-year-old Michael Anthony Hendrix or Rembert turned himself in. Michael Anthony is the son of the two other suspects and was charged with trafficking marijuana as well.
The charge is a class E Felony in South Carolina which carries a prison term of up to 10 years, plus a significant fine.
The bond hearing for all three is scheduled at at 2 p.m. Friday at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center, 1250 Winkles Road, Sumter.
