EASLEY, SC – Easley High School teacher, Greg Fish, resigned after being placed on leave. Now, students are creating an online push to restore their teacher’s job.
The Pickens County School District said they accepted Fish’s resignation last Friday.
In a statement, district officials said Fish “will assist the teachers who will instruct his classes for the remainder of the year, although he will not be returning to the school of the classroom.”
They say students are expected to attend class and be respectful.
A student said Fish’s AP Literature class was at their monthly poetry round table at the Starving Artist off campus. The students write poems without their names on them and then pass them around, and others in the group guess who wrote the poem.
Fish wrote a poem about content they were reading in class which used the “F” word in a sexual manner.
The school district had put Fish on leave and released the following statement:
This week, administration received complaints about content that was shared by an Easley High School teacher. The district administration followed its standard procedure by placing the teacher on leave in order to investigate the allegations. The teacher will not be returning to the school or classroom. As always, the district’s primary focus is the education and welfare of its students. The administration will do everything necessary to make sure students have the academic support that is needed for the remainder of the school year.
We asked the district to elaborate on their statement about Fish not returning to the school, communications director John Eby, said that the school can not expand on the statement at this time because it is a sensitive personnel matter.
Students have created the hashtag #fightforfish and have created an online petition.
