NICHOLS, SC (WBTW) – Several students from the northeast escaped the snow and ice and came down to help victims of Hurricane Matthew this week.
High schoolers from Livingston, New Jersey were spending their spring break in Nichols Thursday doing yard work and cleaning houses impacted by the storm.
The team initially tried to come visit Marion County last March to help with storm cleanup, but a blizzard closed Amtrak, which was the group’s way of transportation.
“Up in New Jersey we had Sandy a few years ago so the Habitat for Humanity Chapter helped out there and when we saw that we could relate to it on like a personal level because of what happened up north by us, so we just figured it was our obligation to come down here and help out the community down here, ” said Zack Kaplan with Habitat for Humanity.
That group was in Sellers Friday and plans to stay through the weekend.
