The eastern Carolina’s are dealing with the hottest weather so far this year and that can take a toll on folks who work outside for a living.

“It’s getting real hot,” said Michael Henry, a parking lot attendant in Myrtle Beach. He mans his station from 9 AM until midnight and says he does his best to stay out of the sun during the hottest hours of the day.

“Try to, but just parking these cars and everything, you can’t be under the shade at all times. So, you have to do your job, but at the same time, the best thing to do is just stay hydrated with water,” said Henry.

Joey Fowler is with the grounds crew at Coastal Carolina University, his job spraying for weeds also had him outside working the parking lots.

“You have to make sure you dress accordingly, work accordingly. Morning time is the best time to do the more strenuous stuff or have you in the most heat,” said Fowler.

Unlike Fowler Henry doesn’t have the chance to take a break from the pavement, and says dealing with the heat in the middle of the day can be the toughest part of the job.

“That brings a lot of heat of as well and then these cars come in, I mean I’m constantly sweating all day from the time I come in until at least 8 o’clock. It’s pure hot.”

He offers this advice for people stuck outside, “well if you want to stay outside and brave the sun, I think you should keep plenty of water. Try to get a cooler if possible, keep some ice handy; and if you feel too hot, take that time to get in some shade cause its very important.”

Still that didn’t stop folks from getting outside to get in a work out.

Joe Goodwin hit the beach volleyball courts in Myrtle Beach.

After finishing up a full day in the sun coaching his daughters team, he played a little four on four with his friends

He says staying safe when its hot out just takes some common sense, as long as we follow through with it.

“Its really simple things we all know, we all know were supposed to exercise, we all know we’re supposed to eat healthy, we all know we’re supposed to put sunscreen on… but do we do it? not all of us do and we pay the price,” said Goodwin.

He recommends staying hydrated, taking breaks in the shade when possible, and not pushing it in the hottest parts of the day.
