LILLINGTON, N.C. (WNCN) – A Harnett County middle school teacher was almost struck by lightning Monday, and it was all caught on camera.

The near-miss was captured on video as the teacher was broadcasting his surroundings on Facebook Live during the storm.

Shawn Hicks, a seventh grade science teacher at Harnett Central Middle School, was trying to get some video to use in his teaching curriculum about weather.

“I think I should go inside,” Hicks said in the video before the lightning struck. “It’s amazing how it’s just clear on this side. Oh, but it’s coming.”

The lightning struck about three minutes into the video.

“One of my friends told me on Facebook Live to be safe and I said, ‘I’m safe, I think,’ and right when I said that, the lightning struck and I bolted,” Hicks said. “My track star came in and I bolted inside to get to safety.”
