GREENSBORO, NC (WFLA/CNN) – A North Carolina college student who thought she was dealing with a ghost in her closet ended up catching an intruder trying on her clothes.
“Since I’ve been living here I’ve been having pieces of clothes missing. Like shirts, pants,” the student, identified only as Maddie, told WGHP.
She says she also found hand prints on her walls and mirror.
Maddie is a junior at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and lives in an apartment near campus with roommates.
They all thought they were dealing with a ghost…until Saturday, when Maddie made a shocking discovery.
“I just hear rattling in my closet. Like it sounds like a raccoon is in my closet,” she said. “I put my hand on the knob and I’m like, ‘Who’s in there?’ And somebody answers me and he’s like, ‘Oh my name is Drew.'”
When Maddie opened the closet door, she says she found a man wearing her clothes.
“My socks, my shoes. Has a bookbag full of my clothes,” she recalled.
Police identified the man as 30-year-old Andrew Swofford. Maddie says she talked with him to keep him distracted after calling her boyfriend for help.
“He tries on my hat, goes in my bathroom and looks in the mirror. He was like, ‘You’re really pretty, can I hug you?’ But he never touched me,” Maddie said.
Swofford was arrested and is now facing 14 felony charges including larceny and identity theft.
Meanwhile, the girls are left trying to figure out how Swofford got inside their apartment. They say their doors are always locked and they didn’t see any damage.
They also told WGHP this isn’t the first time something like this has happened.
Maddie says they found two guys in their living room back in December and contacted their leasing office. An employee told WGHP they changed the locks at the time but didn’t file a police report.
Property managers are investigating to figure out how the intrusions happened.
