DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A tip from a man’s ex-wife led police to his Durham apartment complex where he was then arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run, according to a Durham County search warrant obtained by CBS 17.
On Tuesday, Durham police arrested 65-year-old William Patrick Carl.
His arrest was made in connection to the death of Christina Hayes, 39, of Durham. Hayes was hit and killed while crossing the street in front of the Circle K on N.C. Highway 54 on Aug. 12.
Hayes was hit at night and taken to the hospital where she died Monday morning from her injuries.
Police were looking for the driver of a red 2018 Honda CR-V based on the pieces of the car that were left at the scene of the collision.
According to a search warrant, Carl called his ex-wife multiple times following the incident, but she refused to answer his calls “as they have not been on speaking terms,” the warrant says.
She told Carl to text her, but he responded that the conversation was too important to text. At that point, she called him back, according to the warrant. Carl told his ex-wife that he hit a pedestrian on N.C. 54 on Aug. 12.
After hearing what happened, she told her ex-husband to turn himself in to police. The warrant shows that Carl told her he was too scared and that he was speaking to an attorney who was going to help him in turning himself in.
The woman decided to call Durham police on Tuesday afternoon after speaking with her ex-husband. She told police that Carl drove a dark orange or red 2018 Honda CR-V and also provided police with his name and address, the warrant says.
After receiving the information, police ran the information and found a 2018 Honda CR-V registered to William Patrick Carl at an apartment complex in Durham. The woman told police that the car was currently parked inside an attached garage at one of the apartment units.
Officers went to the complex and observed the home, noticing Carl walking up to his home. They approached him and asked to speak with him, according to the warrant. When officers asked him if he knew why they were there, he said he did and that it was about the incident on N.C. 54.
Carl was arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run involving serious injury or death and is being held on a $10,000 bond.
