CEDAR GROVE, N.C. (WNCN) – The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has all hands on deck investigating a weekend shooting that killed a teen.
Deputies responded to a shooting just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday at a Halloween party at 5223 Mill Creek Road in Cedar Grove.
The party at a barn ended with two people shot and taken to the hospital.
An 18-year-old woman was found behind the party barn suffering gunshot wounds to the head. She was airlifted to UNC Hospital in Hillsborough with life-threatening injuries.
Sheriff Charles Blackwood confirmed Monday the 18-year-old died from her injuries.
According to investigators, a second person was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and later released from the hospital. That victim was unwilling to cooperate with investigators.
Investigators say they are now are looking for two shooters.
Empty bottles of alcohol and beer cans are still at Smokehouse Valley Farms from Sunday morning.
Investigators said underage drinking and drug use are part of the investigation.
“We are looking to see if it was sold,” said Chief Deputy Jamison Sykes. “We’re looking to see if someone provided it.”
Close to 300 people, some teenagers, were dancing inside the barn as shots were fired. The owner of the property told CBS 17 that someone rented out the barn for the night.
He said the shooters randomly fired into the crowd.
The property owner said he heard about 10 gunshots and called 911.
As deputies arrived at the scene, a large number of people were leaving the barn where the party was being held. About 150 people stayed around as officers arrived.
Investigators said many of them are not cooperating.
“It’s difficult,” said Sykes. “There is a mountain of information that we are working through, there’s a lot of rumors going around about things that did not happen so we’re having to filter that out as well.”
