BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WBTW) – A suspect in a trooper-involved shooting in North Carolina has died and officials have identified the suspect and trooper involved. 

According to a press release from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, authorities have identified the state trooper and suspect involved in Tuesday’s shooting in Brunswick County. 

The suspect is identified in the release as Brandon Lovell Webster, 28, of Shallotte. Webster died from his injuries from a gunshot wound at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center.

Trooper S.A. Collins, who is assigned to Troop B, District 6, was identified in the release as the trooper involved. Collins is “a one year veteran of the State Highway Patrol.”

Around 8:55 p.m. on Tuesday, the NCSHP initiated a traffic stop on NC 130 (Holden Beach Road) near Shallotte, according to the release. “During the course of the stop, the trooper discharged his firearm as the violator vehicle accelerated towards him, fleeing the scene. “

Investigators found the suspect a short time later at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, the release also says. “The trooper has been placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation which is agency protocol in any officer involved shooting.”

The NC State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation at the request of NCSHP.
