Americans are expected to buy 12.5 million pizzas on Super Bowl Sunday.

DeMos Pizza in Raleigh says they deliver twice as much pizza on Super Bowl Sunday than they do on a regular Sunday.

But a spike in deliveries can also mean more dangers for drivers.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks pizza delivery as one of the most dangerous jobs in the country.

“We don’t let our guard down,” said Anthony DeMarco, owner of DeMos Pizza.

Pizza delivery drivers in Rocky Mount and Roanoke Rapids were robbed at gunpoint this month and a Domino’s driver in South Carolina lost his life after being shot while delivering a pizza last week.

“It’s a sad world we live in today,” said DeMarco. “There’s crazy stuff going on every time you turn around so we just try to be proactive with safety.”

“We try to let them know just have your head on a swivel,” DeMarco said. “Keep your eyes open, looking around and I don’t let them travel with very much cash either.”

WNCN rode along with Brockmam Galvraith as he delivered pizzas. He knows his job is dangerous, that’s why he carries a knife.

“It’s a little over the top, but just in case,” said Galvraith.

DeMos also stopped accepting cash for deliveries after 11 each night.

“I’ve seen what is possible out there,” said DeMarco. “It’s not the safest thing to do. You are very vulnerable. You’re just like a sitting duck essentially.”

DeMarco says, fortunately, they have not had any drivers get attacked on the job, but one of their drivers did have his car stolen while he was making a delivery.
