It’s South Carolina Severe Weather Awareness Week and this morning there will be a statewide tornado drill.
Although the drill, which is at 9 a.m., is aimed to prepare schools, hospitals and other public entities, officials encourage everyone to participate. If you have a weather radio, you will hear the drill message.
Officials say the most effective way to be prepared for severe weather is to have a plan, and now is the best time to develop one as spring begins in eight days. The arrival of spring means an increased chance for severe weather.
“Now while there is no anxiety of anything going on, it’s time to think what’s your plan,” Randall Gregory, the director of Horry County Emergency Management said. “What’s your family plan? What are you going to do when these events happen? Are you ready for maybe the electricity to be off for three or four days? If you have damage to your property, do you have the right insurance coverages?”
In addition to things like food, water and flashlights; emergency management says having an emergency binder is a good idea.
Things such as birth certificates, lease agreements, copies of credit cards and immunization records should be included.
