South Carolina reports first pediatric flu-related death of season

A child from the midlands region has died from complications related to the influenza infection, according to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Officials say the child’s death marks the state’s first pediatric flu-related death this season.

“This flu season is turning out to be particularly challenging. Along with the rest of the country, South Carolina is dealing with widespread flu activity,” state epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell said.

Approximately 106 additional flu-related deaths have been reported to DHEC this season, according to state officials. That number passes last season’s total of 94.

The flu has killed 140 people so far in North Carolina this season.
