MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WCBD)– According to a Smart Growth America study, South Carolina is ranked the 10th most dangerous state in the U.S. when it comes to walking.
The Dangerous by Design study found that between 2008 and 2017, drivers struck and killed 49,340 people who were walking on roads across the country.
“That is more than 13 people per day, or oner person every hour and 46 minutes. It’s the equivalent to a jumbo jet full of people crashing- with no survivors- every single month.” — Dangerous by Design
According to the study, in the past decade, the number of people struck and killed while walking increased by 35 percent. 2016 and 2017 were the most deadly years for people killed by drivers while walking since 1990 although there was a slight decrease in 2017.
There were 1,144 pedestrian deaths in the palmetto state from 2008 to 2017.
