SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – More than two dozen inmates have filed a lawsuit against the South Carolina Department of Corrections over conditions in the prison system. One of those inmates is Spartanburg County serial killer Todd Kohlhepp.
The federal lawsuit filed in February lists 27 inmates who were mostly kept in protective custody at Broad River Correctional Institution.
The inmates claim they have been subjected to harassment, violation of their civil rights and are forced to engage in unwanted sex acts.
They also claim that they are deprived of medical care and mental health treatment.
Upstate activist Traci Fant says she is hearing the same complaints from inmates at Lee Correctional Institution where seven inmates died in a riot earlier this month.
Inmates at the maximum-security prison tell Fant they are on constant lockdown, forced to drink water out of their toilets and have not had access to showers.
