GILBERT, S.C. (AP) – Authorities say a 30-year-old man beat his grandmother to death in the home they shared and killed a dog.

Investigators say 77-year-old Elaine Hall was found dead Wednesday afternoon after Lexington County deputies were asked to check on her at her Gilbert home.

Sheriff Jay Koon says while deputies were at the home investigating Hall’s death, her grandson Dustin Hoff drove by in her van.

Koon says Hoff was first arrested for driving under a suspended license, and after questioning, detectives charged him with murder.

Koon said in a statement Hoff is also charged with ill treatment of an animal after a dog was found stabbed to death in Hall’s home.

It wasn’t known if Hoff had a lawyer.
