North Carolina’s schools chief says he’ll be among the thousands breaking up a brisk 5-mile run this weekend with glazed doughnuts.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Mark Johnson said he’d be participating in Saturday’s “Krispy Kreme Challenge” in downtown Raleigh.

The challenge raises money for North Carolina Children’s Hospital. Contestants compete to run the first leg, eat a dozen doughnuts and complete the second leg to N.C. State University, all in an hour. Johnson promised he’d aim for that if 95 percent of educators would respond to the annual working conditions survey last year.

The Department of Public Instruction says a record 91 percent responded, but Johnson says he’ll run anyway as a “casual” participant – meaning he won’t be eating all 12 doughnuts handed to him.
