SPARTANBURG CO., S.C. (WSPA) — Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said a woman has died after leading deputies on a chase that ended in an officer-involved shooting Thursday night.
The coroner identified the woman as Jennifer Mabry Robinson, 34, of Spartanburg.
Sheriff Wright said an officer attempted to stop Robinson on Asheville Highway near John Dodd Road because the tag was expired and didn’t match the car.
Wright said Robinson shot at officers during the chase.
He said the pursuit ended when an officer rammed the car that Robinson was driving, forcing her off the road near the intersection of John Dodd Road and New Cut Road.
Sheriff Wright said Robinson led deputies on a short foot chase before she stopped and pointed a gun at her head.
Deputies attempted to talk her into putting the gun down, Wright said. She pointed the gun at a deputy who fired two shots before shooting herself in the head, according to Wright.
The coroner said Robinson died at 9:06 p.m. at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Wright said it’s unclear which round fatally wounded Robinson.
An autopsy has been ordered to document her injuries and determine the cause of death, Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said in a statement.
No deputies were hurt.
The deputies involved will be placed on paid leave per protocol.
The S.C. Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
