COLUMBIA (WSPA / WBTW) – More than 3,000 jobs were added to the South Carolina economy in January, but the state’s unemployment rate went up slightly.
The unemployment rate rose a tenth of a percentage point to 4.3 percent in January, according to the Department of Employment and Workforce.
The national jobless rate in January was 4.1 percent.
“Businesses continue to add jobs at a record pace. People are finding jobs and others are entering the labor force to take advantage of the state’s robust economy, all of which are cause for celebration,” said Cheryl Stanton, executive director of the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce
in a written statement.
“With more than 61,000 jobs available across the state, DEW is preparing our residents, including those with barriers to employment, to be able to succeed in those jobs.”
The agency says manufacturing and trade, transportation and utility sectors filled the majority of the jobs increase. The number of employed people in South Carolina and the size of the workforce both grew in January.

Marion County – 8.4%
Williamsburg County – 7.7%
Marlboro County – 7.1%
Horry County – 7%
Georgetown County – 6.9%
Dillon County – 6.5%
Darlington County – 5.9%
Florence County – 5.4%
