SC teachers and state workers rally for better pay

“I want to be a second grade teacher so I need to come out here because I go to college this year and in the next four years I need to make sure that’s a stable job because if not I need to find another one,” a student said.

From the teachers of tomorrow to the teachers of today, educators around the state rallied on Saturday morning in the shadow of the state house for better funding.

Teachers, state workers and their supporters dressed in red to put their concerns in the spotlight.

The South Carolina Education Association supports a one percent increase across the board for educators and advocating for state workers pay.

Those who rallied say retirement and recruitment are big problems for the education system.

They want competitive salaries and for teachers to continue using their voice.

“Be apart of the legislative process and electoral process because that’s where we can clearly make a difference,” Bernadette Hampton said.
