COLUMBIA, SC (WBTW) – South Carolina Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman will be joined by business leaders for a fly around across the state Friday with five stops to encourage voters to support Amendment 1.
A press release from Superintendent Spearman’s office Friday morning confirms the education leader will travel with former Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum, S.C. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ted Pitts, S.C. Chamber of Commerce Chair Lou Kennedy, who is CEO of Nephron Pharmaceuticals, and other business leaders to five different locations.
The group “will discuss the importance of voting yes on Amendment 1 for accountable education,” the release states.
Amendment 1 will be on the ballot for the statewide general election November 6. Amendment 1 would make the position of state superintendent of education an appointed position, rather than an elected position. The governor would appoint the superintendent after taking in the advice and with the consent of the state Senate.
The state legislature would set the state superintendent of education’s job duties, pay rate, and required qualifications.
If passed by the voters, the measure would take effect on January 1, 2023, or upon a vacancy in the office after the amendment’s enactment but before 2023.
