SC man gets 30 years for 2016 shooting death of woman

ANDERSON, SC (WSPA) – A man has pled guilty in the death of a woman in Anderson, according to the solicitor’s office.

Chevis Morris pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter, armed robbery and burglary 1st degree.  He received a negotiated sentence of 30 years in jail.

He was originally charged with murder in the death of Jennifer Poore at her home.

The coroner says Poore died from a single gunshot wound.

It happened on July 30, 2016 on Russell St. near Hayes Rd.

Prosecutors say Morris had gone to the home with two women to visit.

The shooting was witnessed by one of the women and the other saw him running from the house with a gun in his hand.

Morris told police he noticed Poore had a large roll of cash in her pocketbook.

He said he intended to hit her in the head with the gun and steal her cash, but the gun went off when he hit her, according to the report.

He ran and later broke into a home and stole a car.

He was arrested the next day at his mother’s house.

Jordan Michaela Hart was charged with accessory after the fact of murder.

The two were also charged with first degree burglary and grand larceny for offenses committed while on the run after the killing.

Morris is also facing a separate charge of grand larceny for stealing a different vehicle.

“I hope that this lengthy sentence brings some peace to the family of Ms. Poore, who lost their loved one in a senseless act of violence stemming from greed,” said Solicitor David Wagner following the imposition of the sentence by the court.
