(WSPA) — State senators voted to prohibit abortions with some exceptions late Wednesday night.
The S.C. Unborn Child Protection from Abortion Act is expected to challenge abortion rights if passed.
A third reading and vote will be held Thursday in the Senate.
The bill would prohibit abortions with the exception of rape, incest or prevent serious health risks to the mother.
Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey tells The State newspaper that the bill is “designed to give the court an opportunity to revisit Roe v. Wade.”
Senator Brad Hutto reportedly expressed confidence the ban, if passed by state lawmakers, would be struck down by the courts.
“It’s an attempt to get it to the courts so we don’t have to keep debating it over and over and over,” Hutto told the newspaper.
