SPARTANBURG Co., S.C. (WSPA) — An officer responding to a vehicle theft shot and killed an armed suspect during a confrontation, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday on Holly Springs Church Road near Inman. Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said the deputy responded to a vehicle theft.

A victim told the responding deputy that the suspect pointed a gun at his face, Sheriff Wright said.  Wright told us that the victim’s wife called 911 as he was being held at gunpoint. The suspect didn’t fire his gun.

The suspect presented a gun when confronted by the officer and shots were fired, according to Sheriff Wright. He said the suspect is dead.

The deputy was not hurt.  “He’s fine,” Sheriff Wright said of the deputy. “Thank you Jesus, he is fine.” He did not identify the officer.

Sheriff Wright asked people to pray for the victim and the deceased suspect’s family. His name has not been released at this time.
