As the partial government shutdown enters its third week South Carolina Congressman and House Majority Whip James Clyburn is urging fellow lawmakers in the Senate to work to reopen the government.
“It is time for the Senate to do its part to reopen the government and tell this president that enough is enough.” Said Clyburn.
According to a press release from Rep. Clyburn, in the coming week, the House plans to vote on individual appropriations bills to reopen vital parts of the government.
“It is unconscionable that Senate Leader McConnell would block votes on these bills to reopen the government that received overwhelming bipartisan Senate support just a few months ago.” Said Clyburn in a statement. “Not only are 800,000 federal employees’ livelihood in the balance, millions of Americans are suffering the consequences of this Trump Shutdown.”
The key sticking point behind the shutdown is $5 billion in funding for a border wall on the nation’s southern border. President Trump has remained adamant about building a wall as it was one of his key campaign promises.
“The American people ought not be the president’s hostages over his ill-advised and ill-defined border wall.” Said Clyburn. “He is demonstrating with every day that passes that he is ill-equipped to negotiate his way out of this self-imposed crisis, and the American people are paying the price over his inability to govern.”
