Robeson County sheriff aims to clean up county, wants inmates to help

Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins continues his efforts to try and clean up the county, using social media.

On Tuesday night, Sheriff Wilkins posted a series of pictures, showing a pile of shingles that were illegally dumped along the road at Dew Road and Union School Road.

He said it was done a few days ago but was removed Tuesday with the help of Robeson County Environmental Officers. Sheriff Wilkins says an investigation continues as evidence is analyzed.

Sheriff Wilkins also says his department will be working closely with county officials to strictly enforce the illegal dumping of shingles. He says he’s been in talks with new District Attorney Matt Scott about potentially having people assigned to community service and others be monitored as they are utilized for roadside trash pickup. The sheriff says other inmates in the detention center would be utilized as well.

He says they are preparing a transport van now and setting up a trailer for equipment.

He then had this message:

Please stop littering as it is really not only an eyesore but harmful to the environment and especially our river. All I can do is ask and we will enforce the laws as we can gather the evidence.

The sheriff has been using Facebook a lot since being sworn in, to notify residents of arrests or track down wanted criminals, including those wanted for shooting a security guard during a robbery.
