Red Cross volunteers are preparing to keep people safe before severe weather hits the area.
They say it starts with a solid shelter that can be built at any time — as hurricanes and severe storms take last-minute and unexpected turns.
Volunteers participated in hands-on simulations divided into four parts: opening, operating, resourcing and closing a shelter.
That involves setting up cots, blankets and registration tables. And learning how to deal with clients when they walk through the door.
They say it’s important, especially now that storms are stronger and hit closer to home.
