LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – Police say a man took off in a stolen car when officers told him he was wanted on warrants, drove into a river and swam to the other side.
Before the car rolled into the river, a woman had jumped out of the passenger side, according to the report.
Lumberton Police Department officers stopped Brandon Glenn Ivey, 31, of Lumberton in the area of 1st and Water streets at about 1:22 a.m. on Saturday. The burgundy red car he was driving was registered to someone else, police said.

Officers ran Ivey’s name and found there were outstanding felony warrants for his arrest out of Cumberland County.
Officers say when they told Ivey he was under arrest, he drove away traveling down 1st street towards the river. A female passenger jumped from the vehicle in the area of Stricks Tire, police said.
The car then rolled into the river where Ivey swam to the other side of the river and was taken into custody without further incident, according to the report.
The car was towed from the river hours later when it was deemed safe for someone to enter the river to recover it.
The passenger was not injured and was not charged with anything.
Ivey age was arrested for breaking and entering to a motor vehicle, financial card theft, and felony conspiracy, felony speeding to elude arrest, fic tags, and expired registration. His bond was set at $5,000 secured.
