South Carolina Law Enforcement Division rescheduled the take back operation outlined in the Opioid Emergency Response Plan for this month following a delay Hurricane Florence caused.

Municipalities across the state will collect prescription drugs and take them to Columbia. SLED then plans to take the drugs to Huntsville, Alabama, for incineration.

“I can’t even imagine how many pounds of medication we have in our evidence that’s just difficult to destroy because we don’t have the means to do so,” Loris Police Chief Gary Buley said.

SLED reports it has already identified 2,000 pounds of drugs and expects that number to rise before the operation officially starts on February 26.
