CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – New laws are now in effect for mopeds and golf carts across South Carolina.
Anyone who owns or buys a moped must now register it with the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. You will receive a moped plate, registration card and a decal.
Those plates will only cost $10.00 every two years.
You must be 15-years-old to drive a moped.
However, before hitting the road you must pass a test to get a moped license.
“It’s actually $2 for that test. They’ll come in and test, and once they pass they’ll just go ahead and get that moped license,” said Melissa Bryant, branch manager at the Ladson DMV.
Meantime, an amended law also takes effect today for golf carts.
Any golf cart violation will now be treated as a misdemeanor, if that violation is not deemed a felony by another state law.
Penalties include fines less than $100 and jail time for no more than 30 days.
