The start of 2019 means the start of new laws in South Carolina.

News13’s Georgiaree Godfrey looked at a few that go into effect starting Tuesday.

In the 2018 legislative session, lawmakers passed a few bills that go into effect the first of the year.

South Carolinians with criminal records will start to see changes to what crimes are eligible for expungement.

“Our hope is that this is going to open up employment opportunities for people who have been closed out and for employers who have been trying to find applicants,” said Sue Berkowitz, Director, SC Appleseed Justice.

The bill was originally vetoed by Governor Henry McMaster, but then overturned by lawmakers.

2019 will also be another year of expanded tax credits for low income families, following guidelines set by a bill passed in 2017.

When it comes to that additional two cents drivers have been paying at the pump, starting in 2019, you can claim that on your income taxes.

“When taxpayers claim this, they will have had to save their receipts throughout 2018 for their gas purchases or maintenance on their vehicles. Individuals can claim up to two vehicles or motorcycles on their returns,” said Bonnie Swingle, with the SC Department or Revenue.

Another law that kicks in January 1st requires homeowner’s associations to write out the ‘dos and don’ts’ of the community. Those policies will have to be recorded by January 10th.
