MACON COUNTY, NC (WSPA) – Macon County Schools is urging parents to monitor their child’s social media pages after school officials learned of a group with a suicide pact or “suicidal ideations.”
According to a Facebook post by Macon County Schools, NC, Mountain View Intermediate administration and counselors, as well as Meridian Behavioral Health Services staff members were monitoring a group of students on social media in a group call “Edgy” or “Edgy Fan Page 101.”
Superintendent Chris Baldwin said a school nurse learned of the page from a local health care provider. Baldwin said some students were involved in the group and “may have some sort of suicide pact or had otherwise indicated suicidal ideations.”
Baldwin said families of students involved with the group were notified.
“A Parent-Link message also went out to encourage all MVI parents to monitor their child’s social media accounts and to begin a conversation with their child about dangers associated of this group.”
According to the post, social workers for Macon County Schools and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office worked together to contact students and parents, as well as make home visits.
“Macon Middle School, Mountain View Intermediate, our school social workers and Meridian Behavioral Health have followed up with students and families today,” according to the post. “We will continue to look for ways to monitor our students activities on social media, educate them and parents about the pitfalls of social media and to protect students from self-harm.”
