NEWPORT, NC (WNCT) – A mother may face charges after investigators say she shot her son after he threw a trash can at her inside a home in Carteret County on Sunday.

At 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Carteret County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported shooting at 353 Country Club Lane, off Hwy 101 outside of Newport.

Deputies say 64-year-old Patrice Rippy, who lives at the home with other family members, had an argument earlier that day with her son, 36-year-old Brian Rippy. Brian left the home and returned that night in a rage, Patrice told deputies.

Brian allegedly threw a trash can at Patrice and then charged at her.

That’s when Patrice told deputies she fired six rounds at Brian as he ran toward her because she feared Brian would hurt her and her family.

Deputies say Brian was shot once in the head and once in the torso, and was flown by air ambulance to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he is listed in serious condition.

Detectives say they have questioned Patrice and other witnesses and will determine her charges at the end of their investigation.
