COLUMBIA, N.C. (WNCT) – A state trooper shot a motorcycle driver who ran into him on Saturday, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Trooper B.P. Daniel tried to stop the motorcyclist for a speeding violation on US 64 in Tyrrell County Saturday afternoon.
The Highway Patrol identified the motorcyclist as 19-year-old Braden Bago, who is a member of the 82nd Airborne.
The Highway Patrol said Bago did not stop, and Daniel chased the motorcycle down a dead-end road.
Daniel left his car in an attempt to stop the motorcycle.
The Highway Patrol said Daniel told Bago to stop multiple times.
Instead, Bago drove his motorcycle at Daniel, the Highway Patrol said. Daniel fired at Bago, hitting Bago just before being struck by the motorcycle.
Daniel was taken to Vidant Beaufort Hospital with minor injuries and has been released.
Bago was taken to Vidant Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. He has been released and is in the Pitt County Detention Center.
Bago was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault causing physical injury to a law enforcement officer and felony flee to elude arrest.
An SBI investigation into the incident is ongoing, which is protocol for all the Highway Patrol involved shootings. Daniel is a 16-year veteran, assigned to Troop A, District 4.
