GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) – A Goldsboro family is shaken after two of its vehicles were damaged. Authorities confirm its new SUV was torched. Its minivan had hate messages spraypainted on it.
Amanda Miller said she believes the hate speech was directed at her 14-year-old daughter.
“My daughter, she has always dated black men. All through middle school she had one boyfriend,” Miller said.
Miller said her husband discovered the damage early Thursday morning and immediately called authorities.
She said it happened overnight while her and her family were in their Goldsboro home asleep.
“You’re sitting there thinking, ‘Oh god, what’s next? Are these people going to come back?’” Miller said.
Miller said her daughter — a freshman at Spring Creek High School — has been targeted before, both online and in person.
“She’s always kind of had people starring at her and telling her it’s not the way it should be… and we just kind of tell her, unfortunately, this is the world we live in. But, you never expect that they’re going to go to this extreme,” Miller said.
In addition to those safety concerns, Miller said that new SUV was totaled. She said the insurance won’t cover the full amount they owe, so they’re out $7,000.
Miller said she set up this GoFundMe page to recoup some of the money she lost.
