DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – The Durham County Sheriff’s Office has identified the detention officer who was an innocent bystander when she was killed at the end of a chase involving Durham police Thursday night.
Brooke Lyn Maynard, 24, was killed when a suspect’s vehicle slammed into her Hyundai Sonata and a Chevy Impala at Duke Street and Club Boulevard, officials said.
Maynard was a detention officer with the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, police said.
Maynard started working with the sheriff’s office in Nov. 2017. She was a recent graduate of the Sheriff’s Office Basic Detention Officer Training Academy.
“Her dedication and hard work in her short time with us will leave a lasting impression on all of her Sheriff’s Office family. During this difficult time the Sheriff’s Office requests that her family and coworkers be allowed to process the loss of Brooke and grieve in private,” the Durham County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.
Durham police said officers responded to a deadly multiple-car accident at Duke Street and Club Boulevard after 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Police said the accident happened after a brief chase. They said they tried to perform a traffic stop on a suspected stolen vehicle, but the driver didn’t stop.

The vehicle was a gray 2007 Honda Accord that had been stolen at gunpoint, according to a release. The pursuit was initiated near the intersection of Elizabeth and Ramseur streets.
The short chase ended when the suspect vehicle crashed into the Impala and Sonata.
Maynard was pronounced dead at the scene.
CBS 17’s Amy Cutler described the scene as “horrific.”
The two people in the suspect car were taken to the hospital.
The two other people in the Chevy Impala were transported to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown at this time.
Charges are pending.
