A naked man who was involved in a vehicle crash in Cary assaulted a Wake County deputy Friday evening, officials say.
The incident was reported around 6:30 p.m. when Wake County Deputy J. Rattelade responded to a wreck on U.S. 1 near Tryon Road in Cary, a news release from Wake County spokesman Eric Curry said.
Deputy Rattelade then encountered a man who was naked on the highway, the release said.
“During the attempt to arrest the subject, the man struck the deputy in the head,” the news release said.
Rattelade used pepper spray and got help from Cary Fire Department Engine 3 crews to capture the suspect.
Derwood Johnson, of Fort Worth, Texas, was charged with assault on a government official, Curry said.
Witnesses told deputies that Johnson was driving one of the cars involved in the wreck that happened before the arrest, the news release said.
“Johnson transported to WakeMed Cary Hospital for further evaluation,” the news release said.
Rattelade was not injured, officials said.
