A teenager from Maxton died in a car crash in Robeson County on Wednesday.
The crash happened around 9:50 a.m. on Canal Road in Pembroke, according to Trooper Alan Humphrey, with the NC Highway Patrol. A Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling east on the road and troopers estimate the driver was traveling about 80 mph in a 55 mph zone.
The driver went off of the road to the right, lost control, crossed over and ran off the left shoulder, hit a ditch, hit a driveway, flipped and hit a tree, Trooper Humphrey said. The driver was the only person in the car and was wearing a seatbelt. The car had extensive damage.
The victim was identified as Melvin Dwayne Chavis, Jr., 19, of Maxton.
State troopers also said speed was a contributing factor in the crash.
