LAURINBURG, NC (WBTW) – The sheriff’s office has identified four suspects in the presumed death of a man who has been the subject of a massive search.
Herbert Strickland, also known as JR, of Laurinburg, NC, has been “declared to be deceased,” according to the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office on Friday. Strickland has been missing since Dec. 18.
Authorities conducted a massive search in and around Laurinburg last weekend, looking for evidence pertaining to Strickland’s whereabouts. Additional agencies and resources have joined the investigation, the SCSO reports.
Strickland was last seen leaving a home on Carolina Bay Road and getting into a dark in color SUV.
Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots just prior to the vehicle leaving the scene. Strickland hasn’t been seen since. Investigators say he is believed to be at “a substantial risk for his life and in imminent danger.”
In addition to the four suspects, deputies say they are investigating two more people who may have been involved with Strickland’s disappearance. Names of the suspects have not been released.
Areas searched by agencies include: St. Luke Church Road, Crestline Rd, Hayfield Road and Mark Lane near Crestline Road, Barnes Bridge Road and Hasty Road. The search was extended to McColl, SC, in the area of Hwy 401 near the city limit.
