MAXTON, NC (WBTW) – A man is charged with murder and attempted murder after an argument in Scotland County according to the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office.

Lt. Jessica Sadonikov with the Sheriff’s Office said Samuel Dewayne Smith, 42, got into a “verbal altercation” about a woman between 2 and 2:30 a.m. on Friday. She said Smith shot two people during the argument on Patterson Road near Old Maxton Road – an area behind the Scotland County landfill.

A man who was shot was airlifted and was in critical condition and then stable condition, according to Sadonikov. She would not release any details about the person who was killed.

Maxton Police, U.S. Marshals and the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office helped with the arrest of Smith. Sadonikov said law enforcement officers found Smith at his mother’s house in Maxton.
