LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – A Lumberton man has been sentenced to nearly 31 years for carjacking and gun offenses.
On Wednesday, a U.S. District Judge in Raleigh, North Carolina sentenced 29-year-old Darrick Lamorris McKenzie to 379 months, or about 31 years, in prison followed by five years of supervised release, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice. McKenzie was also ordered to pay $9,500 in restitution.
McKenzie was named in an eight-count indictment that was filed on March 28, 2018, the release said. He pleaded guilty to two counts of carjacking and two counts of brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence on November 19, 2018.
According to the release, McKenzie allegedly robbed MSI (Packer Sanitation) in Lumberton on March 14, 2017. He is accused of pointing a gun at a woman, stealing laptop computers and televisions form the business, and raping the woman.
The release also alleges that McKenzie pointed a gun at a man in a vehicle in Lumberton on March 16, 2017. He is accused of threatening to kill the victim “numerous times,” stealing his wallet, getting into the vehicle and trying to drive away, and firing the gun “from inside the vehicle hitting the windshield behind the rearview mirror.”
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Lumberton Police Department, the Fayetteville Police Department, and the Raleigh Police Department.
