LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – A Lumberton man is facing several charges after officers say he crashed into a utility pole and a house Wednesday night.

According to a press release from the Lumberton Police Department, officers responded to the IGA Fresh Foods grocery story at 1000 N. Pine St. around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday. They had received information about a breaking and entering of a coin operated machine at the grocery store. When officers arrived they saw a man get into a red vehicle and drive down 11th Steet.

“Officers got behind the vehicle which fled. Officer did not pursue,” the press release stated.

Lumberton Police say that vehicle then hit a utility pole and then a house at a high rate of speed in the 1500 block of E. 11th Street. Both the driver and passenger were taken to the local hospital for their injuries. Police didn’t release any other details about those injuries.

No one in the home was hurt.

Mark Young, 44, of Burch Road in Lumberton was charged with driving while impaired, speeding, driving with no operator’s license, failing to stop for stop sign, equipment violation (tires not safe), failing to maintain lanes, fictitious tags, seatbelt violation, careless and reckless driving, no vehicle inspection and possession of stolen license plate. Additional charges are likely, according to Lumberton Police.
