North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper visited a Lumberton business that will benefit from a flood protection grant on Tuesday.
The governor met with company officials and employees at the Rempac Foam Corporation.
The facility flooded during Hurricane Florence last year and during Hurricane Matthew in 2016.
A $700,000 grant from the state to the City of Lumberton will build a four-foot-high berm around the plant to help prevent damage from future flooding.
The business has been in the city for more than 30 years and makes foam products.
“Rebuilding stronger and smarter from natural disasters like Hurricane Florence means preventing damage from future storms, ensuring businesses continue to thrive and keeping North Carolinians employed in good jobs,” Gov. Cooper said in a press release. “This innovative economic development grant will help support Rempac, its employees and the Robeson County economy at a critical time.”
In addition to the grant for the Rempac facility, the City of Lumberton was awarded $400,000 “to help demolish and remove a former motel and restaurant flooded and severely damaged by Hurricanes Matthew and Florence, the release said. Robeson Food, LLC will re-develop the site.
