AWENDAW, SC (WCBD) – Fire crews were dispatched to a structure fire early Monday morning at a building that houses exotic birds.

The fire happened along the 1300 block of Guerins Bridge Road, which appears to be Delorce’s Bird Bard, just before 4:30 a.m.

According to Battalion Chief Mike Bauers with the Awendaw-McClellanville Fire District, no one was inside the home at the time of the fire, but the building houses between 200 and 400 exotic birds – a bulk of which we’re told are okay.

A passerby reported seeing flames coming from the building.

After flames were extinguished, AMFD said on Twitter they were assisting Mount Pleasant Fire Crews with two birds that survived the fire. They said the birds were trapped in their cage and a ladder was needed to bring them to safety.

Those birds have since been rescued.

Battalion Chief Bauers previously told us there was concern about the weight of the cages which they thought could result in collapsing of the wall.

An investigation into how the fire started is underway.

This is a developing story. Count on us for the very latest as it becomes available.
