HIGH POINT, NC (WBTW) – A man from Lake City was charged in North Carolina with murder in the death of his pregnant girlfriend.

Around 12:05 a.m. on Thursday, officers with the High Point Police Department (NC) responded to the Deep River Point Apartments after receiving a dispatch call from “a male stating that his pregnant girlfriend had been shot and is dead,” according to a press release from the HPPD. The caller also reportedly stated that two people ran from the apartment when he came home, but allegedly couldn’t provide a description for either person.

Officers attempted to use a K-9 with the assistance of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office to locate suspects and evidence, but were not successful, the release also said. As a result of a preliminary investigation, “detectives have determined that this homicide is domestic related.”

William J. Hayes, III, 20, is charged with first degree murder of a 20-year-old pregnant woman, police also said. Hayes is allegedly the original 911 caller and the live-in boyfriend of the victim.

The victim’s name is not being released at this time, but the HPPD says she was about 9 months pregnant.

High Point police confirmed to News13 that Hayes has a previous address as Lake City.
