SPARTANBURG, SC  – Kala Brown, the woman who was chained in a cargo container by serial killer Todd Kohlhepp is reacting to a lyric written by rapper Eminem in his new song “The Ringer.”

The line in the song referencing her is “I’m off the chain like Kala Brown.”

Brown’s spokesperson Jenny Dial released the following statement:

Thank you for the concerns; we have seen all of the attention regarding Eminem referencing Kala in one of his newly released songs.
At this time, given we fully know and understand Eminem’s style of rap music (it can come off a little unnerving) but she does not want to take offense or feel as if he is attacking her personally.
It was a clever line that ryhmed and we’d like to leave it at that. Everyone expresses themselves in their own way, and if anything, people will always feel a flash of Kala’s struggle when hearing that line.

Brown was found “chained like a dog” in a 30 x 15 metal container on Kohlhepp’s property on Wofford Rd. in Woodruff.

The solicitor said she was chained inside the cargo container by her neck and ankle.

There was a living space next door to the container that had a bed with chains attached to it.

Brown said she was raped daily before sheriff’s deputies rescued her in November 2016. 

The serial killer held Brown captive after murdering her boyfriend, Charlie Carver.

Carver’s body, along with the bodies of Megan and Johnny Coxie, were found buried on the property.

Meagan and Johnny Coxie were a married couple who authorities say disappeared in 2015.

Kohlhepp also confessed to killing four people at a motorcycle shop in November 2003.

Scott Ponder, Beverly Guy, Brian Lucas and Chris Sherbert were fatally shot at Superbike Motorsports.

Todd Kohlhepp was sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences.

He was also sentenced to 30 years for first-degree and 30 years for criminal sexual conduct. All sentences run consecutively.

As part of the plea agreement, he’s expected to spend the rest of his life in the S.C. Department of Corrections with no chance of parole.

He also can’t appeal.

Brown was awarded $6,318,760 in a lawsuit against Kohlhepp. 

The order said Brown was awarded $1,579,690 in actual damages and $4,739,070 in punitive damages.

She was originally seeking more than $363 million.
