SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – Kala Brown was awarded $6,318,760 million in a lawsuit against Todd Kohlhepp, according to documents.
The order said she was awarded $1,579,690 in actual damages and $4,739,070 in punitive damages.
She was originally seeking more than $363 million.
She wanted $360 million in punitive damages and $3.6 million in actual and compensatory damages for past and future medical costs, pain and suffering, mental anguish and loss of enjoyment of life, according to Bannister, Wyatt & Stalvey, LLC.
“No amount of money will ever compensate Kala for what Todd Kohlhepp did to her,” Mr. Stalvey said. “This payment will act as a form of closure for her, so that she may continue the long road of putting this terrifying chapter of her life behind her and move forward in recovery. This victim deserves this victory.”
Kohlhepp murdered seven people and kept Brown locked in a storage container on his property for two months.
Kohlhepp also confessed to murdering the four victims in the 2003 Superbike murders.
He was sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences.
He was also sentenced to 30 years for first-degree and 30 years for criminal sexual conduct. All sentences run consecutively.
As part of the plea agreement, he’s expected to spend the rest of his life in the S.C. Department of Corrections with no chance of parole.
He also can’t appeal.
If he escapes, the state could re-sentence him and seek the death penalty.
