An inmate has died after he attempted to hang himself in the Chersaw Police Department Jail, Thursday, according to officials.
Chersterfield Count Coroner Kip Kiser identified the inmate as 54-year-old James Edward Pierce Jr. of Wallace.
Chersaw Police Chief W. Keith Thomas said in a press release that Pierce attempted to hang himself with a jail blanket. Officers found Pierce and removed the blanket before starting CPR until EMS arrived.
Officers and EMS were able to regain a pulse and Pierce was taken to McLeod Health Cheraw for treatment. He later died on Saturday.
